We had our first actual snowfall of the season today. The kids were really excited to get out and play. They wanted to have a snowball fight, make a snowman and snow angels, and go sledding. Well they only did the sledding part before they got cold and came inside, but it's the thought that counts. There'll be plenty more snow this winter. Aislinn got quite a kick out of watching our dog's antics in playing in the snow and giggled up a delight while I tried to take pictures of her burying her muzzle in it.
To kick the season off, we completed our evening with gingersnap herbal tea and winter cream oreos.
There's something to be said about snow around this time of year. It really gets one in the mood for the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. I know that really starts it for me. Driving out in it always awes me by the beauty of snow on trees, houses, lawns, cars, and everything else. It sort of hushes everything and makes me want to sit steadfast and just stare outside my window at the wonders God has provided us. I know many folks living here in Utah hate it, but I for one love it. I don't mind shovelling and salting, bundling up extra warm, and scraping car windows just for the chance to have a little fun sledding, snow ball fighting, and building snowmen with my family.
I recall two years ago when I was working graveyards that I came home during a particularly thick, wet snowfalling. I couldn't help but make a snowman right there in my front yard at 2 a.m. My husband, wondering what I was doing outside in the cold came out to see. He brought some materials and we completed a rather lumpy fellow together. Afterwards we engaged in white combat of whitewashing, throwing snowballs, and having a giggling good time.
Another favorite snow memory I have is heading to a decently steep hill as a tradition over by my parents' home to go sledding. We'd take the whole family. We only had one sled, but in would go my husband, followed by the two kids in front of him and me sitting on his shoulders, to fly down that hill as fast as we could before toppling over. That was some of the most fun sledding memories I've ever known.
By February and March I know I'm sick of it and ready to move on to spring, but for November and December, I love snow and really enjoy it.
